Vague Transformations in Information Retrieval
نویسنده
چکیده
Information Retrieval (IR) is often confronted with different and heterogeneous collections of multilingual and multimedial content. Transformations are necessary in order to map between different representation schemes which are the result of different content analysis methods and different terminologies. Vague methods which have been sucessfully applied to IR seem especially suited to tackle the vague nature of such transformations. Statistical methods are reviewed and two experimental systems based on neural networks are presented.

Vague Topological Predicates for Crisp Regions through Metric Refinements
Topological relationships between spatial objects have been a focus of research on spatial data handling and reasoning for a long time. Especially as predicates they support the design of suitable query languages for data retrieval and analysis in spatial databases and geographical information systems. Whereas research on this topic has always been dominated by qualitative methods and by an emp...
متن کاملAn Algebra for Probabilistic XML Retrieval
In this paper, we describe a new algebra for XML retrieval. We first describe how to transform an XPath-like query in our algebra. The latter contains a vague predicate, about, which defines a set of document parts within an XML document that fullfill a query expressed as in “flat” Information Retrieval – a query that contains only constraints on content but not on structure. This predicate is ...
متن کاملNorbert Fuhr Information Retrieval Methods for Literary Texts
Information retrieval focuses on content-based searching in text documents. For this purpose, first text content must be represented, by using a representation language (like thesauri or classification schemes) or by performing free-text search. The latter approach uses either string-based or computer-linguistic methods (stemming, dictionary lookup, syntax analysis). For retrieval, weighting an...
متن کاملModelling Vague Places with Knowledge from the Web Modelling Vague Places with Knowledge from the Web
Place names are often used to describe and to enquire about geographical information. It is common for users to employ vernacular names that have vague spatial extent and which do not correspond to the official and administrative place name terminology recorded within typical gazetteers. There is a need therefore to enrich gazetteers with knowledge of such vague places and hence improve the qua...
متن کاملXML Information Retrieval and Information Extraction
We present a new query language for information retrieval in XML documents and discuss its combination with information extraction methods. XIRQL is an XML query language which implements IR-related features such as weighting and ranking, relevance-oriented search, datatypes with vague predicates, and structural relativism. For information extracted from texts, XIRQL can rank records based on u...
